Designated as a World Cultural Heritage site, it boasts some of the most amazing places you must visit at least once in your life. Below, you'll find the must-see tourist spots in Arequipa for your travel itinerary.

1. Monasterio Santa Catalina

Located in the heart of Arequipa, the Monasterio Santa Catalina is a grand example of colonial Peruvian architecture. Built in the 16th century and spanning over 2,000 square meters, it features colorful streets, fascinating history, and stunning architecture. It’s one of the top tourist attractions in Arequipa. To get there, walk a few blocks from Arequipa's Plaza de Armas, along Santa Catalina Street next to the Basilica Cathedral, for about 4 blocks. Alternatively, join a guided tour of Arequipa that includes a visit to the monastery.

2. Volcán Misti

For adventurous travelers, Volcán Misti is a must-see. Standing at 5,822 meters above sea level and over 800 years old, it’s one of Peru’s 16 active volcanoes. The trek to the summit takes about 2 days and offers incredible views from 4,000 meters above sea level. The volcano can be seen from anywhere in Arequipa, but to experience a trek, it’s best to join a guided tour with an experienced guide.

3. Mirador de Yanahuara

The Mirador de Yanahuara provides a 360-degree view of Arequipa. Located in the picturesque district of the same name, it offers stunning views of the city, with characteristic arches featuring quotes from famous Peruvians. You can reach the mirador from central Arequipa in about 10 minutes on foot.

4. Reserva Nacional de Salinas y Aguada Blanca

This natural reserve is home to majestic Andean volcanoes and wildlife such as llamas, vicuñas, guanacos, and alpacas. It also features the Zumba Cave with over 500 ancient rock paintings dating back 5,000 to 7,000 years. To get there, take a taxi from Arequipa to Chiguata, about 25 kilometers away. From there, you can either walk for about 2 hours or continue by taxi to the reserve.

5. Bosque de Piedras Choqolaqa

Known as the ancient city of Arequipa, Choqolaqa features majestic rocks. Local legends say that the ancient civilization turned the city into stone. Visiting Choqolaqa feels like a journey back in time, with each rock formation revealing secrets of the ancient civilization. To visit, travel to Tisco and then consult locals for directions to Choqolaqa, which is about 2 hours away. It’s recommended to take a tour from Arequipa.

6. Cañón del Colca

Cañón del Colca is one of Arequipa’s most famous natural attractions. At 3,600 meters above sea level, it offers stunning views, including the flight of condors and relaxing hot springs. The canyon is one of the deepest in the world. You can visit independently by bus or taxi, but a guided tour is recommended to fully experience the canyon.

7. Ruta del Sillar

The Ruta del Sillar is known for its white construction walls made of volcanic stone. This material has been used in construction for centuries. Enjoy a tour of the sillar quarry to see the extraction process and how this unique stone is used. Buses and taxis can take you to the quarry, but a guided tour is the best way to experience it.

8. Bosque de Piedras de Imata y Catarata de Pillones

The Bosque de Piedras de Imata features naturally sculpted rock formations created by wind and rain. Nearby, the Catarata de Pillones offers a refreshing waterfall experience. The stone forest is 145 kilometers from Arequipa, so it's best to travel directly to the site to fully enjoy the experience.

9. Cañón de Cotahuasi

Known as the Canyon of Wonders, Cañón de Cotahuasi is located 400 km north of Arequipa and is one of the deepest canyons in the world, at 3,535 meters deep. It’s an unusual experience for those interested in wildlife and Andean culture. Buses from Arequipa depart around 5 p.m. and arrive in Cotahuasi at 3 a.m. There are 24-hour hostels and a local tourism office for maps and advice. Joining a tour is also recommended.
