Important Details

Location: The Colorful Filuda Mountain, or Pallay Punchu, is situated at 4,700 meters above sea level, in the district of Layo, and the province of Canas. The travel time from Cusco to the mountain is approximately 3 hours.

Climate: During the hike to Pallay Punchu, the weather will change.

  • Dry Season: Starting from the parking lot, the weather will be warm, but as you ascend, it will become colder, with the presence of winds at the mountain.

  • Rainy Season: It is advisable not to visit during this season, as the mountain is new and the road is unpaved, making transportation difficult. Additionally, there is no established safe path, and you will encounter rain and cold winds on the mountain.

It is also important to be acclimated to the altitude. It is recommended to acclimate in the city of Cusco for at least 1 to 2 days before engaging in this or any other activity outside Cusco to avoid altitude sickness.

Pallay Punchu or Apu T’akllo's Mountain of Colors

Located at 4,700 meters above sea level, Pallay Punchu was discovered amidst the pandemic in the province of Canas. Its stunning colors and resemblance to a traditional Andean poncho quickly went viral on social media, attracting a significant number of visitors in 2021.

At Pallay Punchu, you'll witness a variety of vibrant colors, including red, brown, magenta, and more, making it a truly unique destination. It is also accompanied by the breathtaking Langui Lagoon.

How to Reach Pallay Punchu Independently from Cusco

Currently, there are few transportation options available to the mountain. You can either hire a private vehicle or use your own transportation.

  • Departure Time: Leave Cusco around 4:00 am to 4:30 am for a 3-hour journey to Layo, which involves traveling on various roads.

  • From Layo: Once you arrive in the district of Layo, you will need to take an additional 20-minute drive to the parking lot. From there, you will begin a 2 to 3-hour hike to reach the mountain. The duration of the hike will depend on your physical condition.

  • During the Hike: As you ascend, you'll enjoy stunning views of Lake Layo and the surrounding mountains.

  • At the Mountain: Upon reaching the base of the mountain, you'll have a magnificent view of Pallay Punchu. From the summit, you can also enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Layo.

After your visit, return to the starting point to head back to Cusco.

Where to Eat?

  • Breakfast: You can have breakfast in the city of Sicuani, which is about 1 hour before arriving at the mountain.

  • Lunch: You can also have lunch in Sicuani upon your return, or buy food from local vendors at the parking lot or in the district of Layo.

Where to Stay?

  • Accommodation in Sicuani: If you want to arrive earlier or stay an extra night, you can find accommodations in Sicuani.

  • Camping: If you enjoy camping, you have two options:

    1. Near Lake Layo: Camp on the shore of Lake Layo and enjoy the sunrise.
    2. At Pallay Punchu's Base: Camp on the Pallay Punchu plateau. Note that you should be experienced with high-altitude camping as it can be very cold at night.

  • If you prefer not to worry about organization and meals, you can book a tour to Pallay Punchu. Tours usually include everything you need.

Minimum Age for Visiting Pallay Punchu

  • There is no minimum age requirement, but it is recommended for children aged 5 and older, provided they are used to hiking.

Recommendations for Visiting Pallay Punchu

  • Trekking Shoes: Wear appropriate hiking footwear.
  • Sun Protection: Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a hat or cap.
  • Acclimatization: Spend 1 to 2 days acclimatizing to the altitude before your visit.
